The Old Sea is a mysterious place, and a terrifying one. Terrifying because its expanse is unknown, and covers the entirety of the unknown ocean, untraversable too far from land, due to the creatures that lurk within the depths, and prey upon any ship or Triton fool enough to go so far out from Auzera, in any real direction.

History[]

There is not much within Triton texts any longer that give much information as to what is beyond the Old Sea, if anything. All that is known is for as long as history has been recorded, any attempts to survive the raging of the sea’s storms and beasts so far from home, always resulted in destruction. None have returned to tell a tale of success, and rarely any return at all.

All that is seen within the basic knowledge of the triton people’s is that their civilization was once vast, within the deepest parts of the depths, and not just along Auzera’s shorelines. However, the Councils and Deep Priests argue the reasoning behind this.

The Councils vs Deep Priests[]

The Triton Councils believes that this occurrence must have been the result of poor management, inter-familial fighting, and bureaucracy. Perhaps even a civil war. The Deep Priests, however, detest this notion, and insist that such a thing must have been caused by something more, something in regards to their unknown patron, simply referred to as the Deep One. They believe that some sort of event, or punishment upon their people took place, and that the only way to gain back lost favor is to uncover the mysteries of the Lost Cities.

A vast majority of council families roll their eyes at this, but in private. As far as they care, those places are for exiles, and the shamed. Anything worth keeping secret down there is lost to time.

Present Day[]

The Deep Priests believe that beyond the Old Sea's traverse lay the answers the Triton people seek. Beyond its deadly expanse, lies the truth behind the destruction of their empire, the annihilation of their people, and the Deep One’s absence that is undeniably palpable. Questions raised bring no answers, only more questions.

The creatures of the sea are completely hostile within its unmarked borders, and things that should not exist in size have been seen and proven to lurk in wait. Swarms of smaller fish and beasts that seem to only attack would be trespassers as well as those just getting close enough to try and study are frequently spotted. In fact, the only reason why the Triton people exist at all is because these creatures of the depths do not come close to land, regardless of the damage that could be wreaked. The behavior and situation defies normalcy, the priests argue, and it is something that must be overcome to discern what has happened in the past - and where the future will lead them.

It is rumored that some sort of specialized expedition is being created by the priesthood, something that is supposed to be able not only to survive passing the old sea...but through its depths as well...
