Attributes[]
- Major - Swordsmanship: A couple of years of cutting down trees, and playing around with wooden swords when bored has led Marcus to assume some familiarity with the weapon. Still, one should wonder whether his opponents or himself is in more danger of his own “skill”, and Marcus often hits himself badly in the head “practicing”.
- Minor - Pyrotechnical: A few years of tampering with makeshift thermal weaponry means Marcus has a somewhat detailed understanding of the workings of pyrotechnics, although more often than not he will inevitably set fire to his own home due to his novelty still.
- Minor - Cheap Bronze armor: Once in a while, a wealthy son will come down and offer his father’s “prized armor” to be displayed outside the church, in which he “slew many warriors”. This is a blatant lie. That armor is made of cheap bronze, sold from a traveling merchant somewhere beyond this place, nowhere near anything worthy of the lowliest knight, and the father was not a warrior- he is a tax collector all his life. Still, Marcus takes some of those pieces, mainly legs, shoulders, and his right arm, to make something of a makeshift “warrior priest’s armor”, to which he says the armor is to make for a humble warrior. It is not close to even being considered a complete set, and in reality wooden armor would not break under what this cheap replica armor would most definitely break under, but that’s not the goal. So long as they believe it's real, no one should try such a thing. Also sometimes Marcus wonders if he’s wearing it backwards, because the shoulder feels a bit tight.
Detriments[]
- Major - Addiction: addicted to the concoctions of herbs, often more than not the holy priest can be seen buying rather suspicious products from merchants. Having become extremely addicted to it, he carries with him a flask filled with ground up herbs which he does not name, but most certainly is of some intoxicating presence. While intoxicated, Marcus becomes more violent with his pyromania, and if he is not fed this concoction, the relapse will lead to a slow loss of sanity which culminates in him seeing everyone as terrifying monsters, to which he will begin to attack everyone and everything in sight.
- Minor - Pyromaniac: Extremely prone to tampering with flammable objects or creating explosives, it is not unusual for the church to be caught ablaze every once in a while, although Marcus claims it is the work of daemons, and that he himself is innocent of any crimes.
- Minor - Ladies’ man: A good woman is all you need in life son. Marcus takes his father’s traits to heart, as a woman pleaser. And he pleases women quite well, albeit at his own stolen wallet the next morning.
Backstory[]
Marcus was born to a family of church acolytes who immediately gave him over to the order. Brought up as an orphan at a convent, Marcus was destined for the priesthood. Subjected to thousands of hours of endless religious propaganda and training, his faith is absolute. He was set to become a knight of the order. If he ever made it there, however, it would not be because of good deeds.
Lying, backstabbing, and corruption are all games that are played behind the veil of holiness in Gradia. And in the rich lands of Gradia, Marcus learned the tricks of the sinful priests, cunning nobility, and racist drow slave traders. Eventually, the order began to see him not as a knight, but as an agent. And when the chaos in the kingdoms far away began, he was selected to breed chaos and to undermine the beliefs of the heathens, to make way for a religious revolution under Mithraix.
Marcus has very few friends and fewer enemies. He knows his craft well, and he knows how to manipulate people to do his bidding, whether they realize it or not. By most days he is a holy priest, bidding adventurers on their way and making sure all who venture are safe with the lord’s blessing. By any other time he is an agent for the order, seeking their ultimate plan in the domination of all lands.
Fanatical and partially insane, the brainwashed young priest seeks to initiate all into the way of Mithraix, and seeks a world by which the strong rule, and the weak are consumed, much like the drow who were sold like pigs in Gradia. For now he can tolerate the intermingling of species, but eventually, he will convince those of every race, that some must be culled for the good of the whole. And when they all descend into a mad struggle for power, even if he should not live to see it, he will be the one having the last laugh...
