"Magic involves exploration, imagination and creativity put together using elements, physical forces and science to achieve great things" ― Kei Noriaki in his first lesson

Magic is the power system used in the Ascension Academy RP universe. Magic is widely used and accepted in the world, but the limits of it are unknown.

History[]

The history of magic goes back to the Elves before the Great Pulse happened, although most documents related to that can only be found on the Ancient Library at Aldoria. Magic is a very wide range topic, it involves theory, some of it is practical and some of it is insanity, and because of this the current understanding of magic is very flawed.

Mana[]

Mana is the fuel used for the magic to happen. Mana at its core is an energy that is connected to life and death and connects every known universe according to magic scholars. Due to the mysterious nature of mana, Magic theologians have come up with a model of how mana is connected to everything called the Basic Flow of Mana theory. The Basic Flow of Mana theory establishes that mana comes from the Mana stream and flows to either the Gods or the Caster. The mana stream refers to the place where mana originates, it is unknown how or where the mana stream was created but it is believed to be connected to the very fabric of creation. The Gods are referred to as supernatural beings that take mana from the mana stream and enhance it with their own essence. The caster refers to the individual that takes the mana directly from the Mana Stream or a God to manifest it in the physical world using knowledge of the physical laws of the plane.

Elements & Affinities[]

Each world connected to the mana stream follows its own principles of how mana is manifested through magic according to the elemental makeup of that world with each world having its own independent magic principles. In the Ascension Academy world, mana can be broken in 4 key elements:

  • Air.
  • Earth.
  • Fire.
  • Water.

These elements are referred as elemental forces as they dictate the physical interaction that occurs in the world. After the Great Pulse, it was discovered that Light and Dark were also connected to the mana stream and most recently, after human mages tried to recreate phenomena of the world for what would be known later as Weather Mage, Lightning was discovered to also be connected to the mana stream. Lightning in particular seems to be a wild element as when it was discovered

Affinities on the other hand dictate the grade of attunement of an individual to certain elements. Most individuals have at least one elemental affinity that was set from birth, others will have two affinities. Affinities can also change if the individual is changed through extreme means like vampirism but there is little knowledge of this.

Mana Pool[]

Mana Pool refers to the amount of mana that an individual have. Most of individuals can use magic but few have the knowledge to manipulate mana and even fewer have the mana pool to sustain a spell. Mana pool is defined by birth and there are no known methods to enhance the capacity of it.

Mana Burn[]

Mana Burn is an effect of exhausting your total mana pool and forcefully using your body to wield magic even without mana. The effects of mana pool vary but they all are negative to the affected and it could even lead to death. Mana Burn is usually seen being used for life and death situations but there are other cases where it has been done because ignorance, pride or ineptitude.

Schools of Magic[]

The The 9 Schools of Magic is a method used to classify magic by the effect it produces. The schools are:

  • Abjuration.
  • Conjuration.
  • Divination.
  • Enchantment.
  • Evocation.
  • Illusion.
  • Necromancy.
  • Transmutation.
  • Universal.

Magic Strengths & Opportunities[]

Kei Noriaki, the only known multi-elemental mage.

Magic by not only the common person, but also by magic wielders can be easily misrepresented and misunderstood. In the world, it is commonly believed that an individual could only have two elemental affinities, but in fact this is a misunderstanding where most magic users limit themselves to only those two affinities.

Kei Noriaki is an example of this as he has claimed to have 2 strong affinities (Earth, Water) and one learned (Wind), while also being able to do fire spells[1]. Weather mages are magicians that combine different element magics to be able to wield Weather in different ways.

Focus[]

Focuses are items that have the remarkable ability to harness a user's mana and produce specific effects based on the properties of the materials used in their creation and the distinct magical processes involved. These effects can range from augmenting particular spells to enhancing specific elemental affinities. Some focus are even designed with the sole purpose of casting a single spell. However, it is crucial that the materials used in the creation of a focus possess Mana-Conductive properties; otherwise, the focus will not function at all.

Wands & Rods[]

Wands and rods are commonly used as focus, typically crafted using various types of wood based on the specific requirements of the individual user. Wands, being smaller in size, are highly favored due to their portability and are, in fact, the most popular type of focus in the known world. On the other hand, rods are larger, with some users wielding rods even taller than themselves, making them slightly cumbersome to carry. However, the advantage of a rod lies in its larger size, providing more material and space to work with. This allows for the inclusion of larger components such as crystals, resulting in enhanced and more potent effects.

Non-Conventional Focus[]

GMA Magic Bracelets

Non-Conventional focus are tools or weapons with mana conductive materials that are not wood based or that wood it's the main material. Thanks to this conductive property, this object can be used as a focus even if it was not created with that objective. Examples of Non-Conventional Focuses:

Artifacts[]

There is little known about artifacts but most of them seem to be pretty old and they are usually related to the elven society before The Great Pulse as they have been found near ruins of this civilization that correspond to that era. This artifacts seem to wield extraordinary magic and not only they are very difficult to reproduce but they take a lot of time to even figure out the true extent of the magic contained on them.

Some artifacts:

Spell Casting[]

Spell Casting is the act of manipulating mana to produce a set result that can be achieved in different by use different methods that help the spell caster manipulate mana into a form that will produce a spell.

Generic Spells[]

Spells that can be learned by any magic user, these spells are commonly found in books like Transmutation Spell Book and they are verbally cast using specific words that will trigger a specific reaction. Example: Do Vox Purify to purify water.

Unique Magic[]

Jamie's Unique magic

Unique magic refers to the magic developed based on the individual traits of the magic user. Unique magic needs extensive research and imagination to be effectively used.

Divine Magic[]

Divine magic is the magic that uses mana from a deity to manifest a spell. Limitation and effects vary depending on the deity characteristics, and the knowledge of it is very scarce. Divine Magic Users:

Leylines[]

AscensionMapLeyLines

Leyline map

Leylines have been around longer than the Great Pulse, with ancient elf studies about them, some hidden away in secret places, and others lost forever. The Great Pulse was an event that sent a burst of energy through the leylines. This surge created new "converging zones" where multiple leylines meet. Typically, these zones have two or more leylines coming together. At these converging zones, strange things can happen. This is because the leylines carry mana, which is like the world's lifeblood. The intense concentration of mana at these zones can even change the physical landscape. For example, the Faltavius Institute was built on floating rocks, thanks to the powerful mana in the converging zone. Leylines have been mapped, and old stories say that they were once used as pathways for transportation. They also increase the amount of mana in the area, making the surroundings more magical.

However, not all converging zones are the same:

-Green Converging Zones: These zones, marked in green on maps (like in places such as Dead Marsh, Artin, and Maug'dod), cause magic to act strangely. The mana flow in these zones doesn’t follow its natural path, turning magic into "wild" and unpredictable forces. The Dead Marsh zone, for example, was altered after a battle to destroy the corrupted Camelot, severing its connection to the main leyline.

-Red Converging Zones: These zones, marked in red (like in the Iron Peaks), make magic harder to use instead of turning it wild. Legends say the Red Convergence Zone was caused by a god's wrath that struck the area, raising the Iron Peaks and disturbing the leylines. Over time, this zone has corroded the land, making it harder for magic to flow properly.
