Backstory[]
Born to Daniell and Lidda Hartford, Lauretta grew up in a household split by turmoil. Close to Lauretta’s birth, Lord Daniell Hartford had become increasingly convinced of his wife’s infidelity. Brash outbursts from the Lord could be heard around their household. Upon her birth, Lauretta’s blonde hair and bright eyes were unmistakable, she was her father’s daughter.
Nearing Lauretta’s seventh summer, her father’s brashness turned to rage. His fit of anger could be heard across the countryside. Screams could be heard within his chambers, followed by perfect silence. On the next morning, the Lord was found with the cold lifeless body of his wife in his arms. Congealed blood formed in a pool around them. Lidda’s once beautiful face had been caved in by a candlestick, her husband’s face was gaunt and his gaze a million miles away.

After many of the honorable men left Hartford land for more noble endeavours, the house was left as a shell of its former self. Lauretta spent much of her childhood in close proximity to what was left of her fathers retinue. One character of note was Sebastian Rossi, the mysterious elderly stable hand, who hailed from Gradia. Lauretta, gravitated towards the interesting man. Over time he opened up on his past. In his formative years, he grew up as a swashbuckling pirate, and later a mercenary cavalier.
Lauretta nagged Sebastian for nearly a year before he broke down and eventually taught her how to wield a sword. Regular swords were a little unwieldy for her lithe frame, but she learned, slowly. A few years on, Sebastian gifted the girl with something from his past: an ornate rapier. As time passed, Lauretta garnered more of a rebellious attitude towards her father. Daniell would constantly send Lauretta to work with the men of the house to teach her a lesson. Although they were a rambunctious and callous lot, they treated Lauretta kindly, in memory of her late mother. The older guards would regale Lauretta with tales of the knights of house Hartford from years past. A spark was lit within the young girl. She had to know more. Raiding the scribes library of all texts on her house was all Lauretta did during the spare time she had. When her father finally caught word of her new little obsession, he was not impressed. Daniell tried to solve the problem by putting more tasks on her hands.

On the eve of her seventeenth year, Lauretta started getting messages from lording over the realm, seeking out her hand in marriage. Lauretta had never considered anything of the like. Her? A Lady? Never. These messages and attempts for her hand came more and more often over the next few years. At a point she had enough.
One morning she finally got up the courage to confront her father about all these offers of engagement. She had never talked to her father in such a manner before, and only responded by staring at her coldly. “My darling daughter.” He started, with a shrill tone to his voice. “If you do not choose, I will do so for you.” Lauretta argued with her father, and after a few minutes he became more irate. The battle of words raised in volume, with Lauretta finally stating she was never going to accept any of the dim witted lordlings. Daniell’s eyes glazed over with anger and grabbed the young girl by the neck. Their eyes locked, his empty, hers filled with tears. A flash of realization came over the Lord and he dropped his daughter to the ground. Coughing and sputtering, Lauretta grabbed as much as she could fit in a pack, her rapier, and a horse and rode off towards Adwick to seek refuge...
