Energy Keystones[]
Energy Keystones are Rune inscribed stones from the mines of Esperia. These Keystones have been attuned to a magical spell or effect to continuously supply them with magical energy from the surrounding area. This allows the caster to maintain a spell indefinitely unless the caster dies, ends the spell, or the area is fully depleted of magical energy.
Keystones are made via a lengthy inscribing process and are generally only used for strong spells, which are not used lightly. The process, being so specific, helps prevent the stones from being stolen. Once linked, they can not be re-purposed without the original inscriber removing the link or a skill inscriber redoing the inscription. This process is known as “Recouping” and is best performed in a Temple or place with strong magical energy.
Most Keystones active in the world are used for travel or beneficial spells/effects. However, some nefarious individuals have been known to use them for taboo rituals, such as maintaining undead or continuously binding a being/creature to this realm against their will.

Attunement Crystals[]
Attunement Crystals are the raw form of Energy Keystones, as best we can tell anyway. The naming is used loosely at times making distinguishing difficult. Attunement Crystals can be turned into Keystones by Esperia through an unrevealed process, which allows them to store large amounts of mana and power various devices such as the portals around Ascension Academy. The Crystals can be attuned to a specific energy or element to test affinity, or used to power shields such as the Dome over Ascension Academy.
The following is speculative but founded on lore and geology: It is possible the large crystal deposits under Ascension Academy are the result of large amounts of mana deep underground in Southern Valendor in the aftermath of The Pulse. The hot springs near the school suggest that the region still has volcanic activity to some degree, which could be how the deposits are forming- underwater lakes charged with mana are pushed up and then flow down the mountains into the valley, where the mana is concentrated by the groundwater flow until they form Attunement Crystals underground.
Trivia[]
- Energy Keystones are created using Attunement Crystals, and are very similar in nature. The names are often used interchangeably both in and out of universe and the lines that separate them are not fully understood out of universe yet.
- The Attunement crystal on the Ascension Academy roof is one of the largest Attunement Crystals ever discovered, and was mined from the Ashvar Mine under the school.
- The Corrupted Attunement Crystal found in the Ashvar Mine by the students is commonly mistaken as a Blood Stone but it is in fact not one.
