"I'm angry, I'm not brave." ― Avery

Origin[]

Avery is a fairy, hailing from the city of Sylph. Having grown up hearing about the sorts of abilities their kind used to have before the Calamity, and how there used to be more than one grove, as well as being inspired by the loss of their older sibling, they grew angry, deciding to join the Wardens in order to kill as many magibeasts as possible in retaliation for what they have lost.

Having grown up in Sylph, they follow many customs that might seem rude, offensive, or strange to those from outside the fey city. While some of their behavior may initially come off as bullying, the majority of it is well meaning or neutral, filtered through a mixture of fey customs and poor social skills.

History[]

Before Reinhold[]

At some time between growing up in Sylph and becoming a Warden candidate, Avery worked as a caravan guard, venturing outside of the walking cities and contending with raiders and magibeasts.

Upon joining the Warden Candidate program, Avery was assigned Leon Finley as their "battle buddy", quickly settling on the nickname "Nerd" for him. The two quickly established a working chemistry together, with Leon the smarter and more thoughtful of the two, and Avery much more blunt and confident. Despite often teasing Leon, Avery took the battle buddy responsibility seriously, taking efforts to make sure Leon didn't miss meals, and coaching him in the basics of weapon use.

In the Keep runs, Avery was assigned to Team 3, along with Markus Blackstone, Opal Bloodwell, Bailey Douglas, Iku'lylah, Arlo Sarkis, and Yuriel Sinclair. Team 3 quickly found camaraderie, and despite their somewhat chaotic social interactions, were able to operate as a well-oiled machine, clearing the Keep with no friendly fire, and defeating the first (simulated) Class C Magibeast.

Arrival in Reinhold[]

Following the final exam, and the move to Reinhold, Avery and Leon had their battle buddies reassigned, with Avery being assigned their fellow roommate Asher Wildwood as his new battle buddy, and Leon being assigned Milo, the latter of whom joined the other three as their new roommate. During the core selection ceremony, they chose a fire core.

Avery spoke with multiple people about what they wanted for their ARMS, particularly focusing on how to make their weapon usable in both their natural and increased heights. Several other candidates offered a variety of ideas, but in the end Avery seemed interested in all of them, not ending up settling on anything at the time.

Forge Breaker Arc[]

During the mission to attempt to draw out and capture the Forge Breaker, Avery was assigned to the team in the Central District, one of the backup teams made up of candidates who did not yet have functioning ARMS. Due to their flight allowing them to reach vantage points, Avery was chosen to carry the radio for their team, relaying information to the other candidates on the ground, and occasionally giving information over radio to the other groups. Their district saw no combat, with Avery expressing frustration at not getting to fight anything. The only events of note were a couple of instances of the Forge Breaker mimicking voices in the area towards the end of the night.

Over the two weeks following the mission, Avery met with Walter Geist to help design their ARMS. The result was a short-handled axe with a head that could split in two, opening and closing like boltcutters, and an extendable handle that allowed for the axe to be wielded two-handed regardless of Avery's height.

When the Forge Breaker returned and took Councilwoman Verrona hostage, Avery remained on standby with the majority of the other candidates. They participated in the final battle against the creature that the Forge Breaker transformed into. They landed several incidental hits, assisted in trying to pin the creature in place when General Lazarus attempted to grab the creature's heart, and was among the first of many Wardens to attack the creature's head in an attempt to disable it when it bit Lazarus in response.

After the battle, Avery attempted to help console Opal, who had been friends with Forge Breaker's civilian identity. After feeling like they had failed to help, Avery spent the rest of the evening frustrated with themselves, though at some point later in the week Opal approached to thank them for helping.

Festival[]

During the weeks leading up to the festival, the Warden Candidates were assigned to four teams for their upcoming mission to the ruins of Vanderhal. Avery was assigned to Principal Valdris and Professor Reginald's team, along with Mal, Felix, Rue Thekt, Evan, Ione, Opal, Theodore, and Cain.

Avery managed to fully attune to their core during this period, inadvertently causing an explosion in the process. Their attunement also resulted in their wings starting to glow.

Avery was approached by Councilwoman Verrona, who had noticed the blue morpho wing that Avery wears around their neck and was aware of the meaning of the pendant in fey culture. She was able to confirm that the wing belonged to Avery's deceased sibling, Thistle. Avery insisted that they had no intention of getting themselves killed, and that their goal was simply to kill magibeasts, and send money home to their remaining family.

Traits[]

Strengths[]

  • Drug Resistance - As a fey, Avery has an extremely high drug tolerance, rendering most non-fey-made drugs and alcohol ineffective. Their cigarettes contain fey-grown plants rather than ordinary tobacco, and they have stated that the smoke from them might be harmful to 'mayflies'.
  • Flight - As a fairy, Avery has functioning wings that allow them to hover and fly at will.
  • Size Changing - Avery has the ability to change between their true height of less than 1 meter up to a size more typical for races such as humans. They have stated that they can only change between these two sizes.
  • Strength - Although it does not seem particularly out of the ordinary at first, Avery's strength level does not change relative to their height, meaning that at their true height, they still possess the strength of an athletic and fully-grown human.

Weaknesses[]

  • Size - Although Avery has the ability to magically increase their size to one more standard for other humanoid races, their true height is less than a meter tall. If injured or exhausted, they have trouble maintaining their false height, and can be more susceptible to damage at their smaller height.
  • Wings - Avery's wings are sensitive and delicate. A direct blow to them causes extreme pain, and will immediately revert Avery back to their natural height.

Trivia[]

  • Although primarily masculine-presenting, Avery is nonbinary, with no preference with regards to pronouns.
  • Avery has 6 siblings. It is strongly implied that they have had to help take care of their siblings, resulting in learning to do things like cook and sew.
  • Avery wears a necklace with a pendant containing a preserved blue morpho butterfly wing.
  • Avery refers to non-fey as "mayflies". They are seemingly unaware of its potential offensiveness as a term for the short-lived, simply considering it to be the word for beings who are not of fey heritage.
  • Avery makes an effort not to thank people unless they consider themselves close, a leftover cultural practice from when fey had the power to make magically binding deals.
  • They particularly enjoy spicy food, and sweet food, often adding hot sauce when cooking, and ordering entire cups of plain coffee creamer from the cafe.
  • Avery's wings generate "fairy dust", a naturally occurring glitter that they shed. It is just as difficult to clean up as mundane glitter.
  • Avery's mohawk occurs naturally, as a result of fairy dust getting in their hair.
  • Avery refers to people by nicknames rather than their real names, a leftover cultural practice from when True Names held power for the fey. Because the act of 'naming' someone is like a personal gift, they have given personalized nicknames even to candidates who already go by nicknames, such as Scout. They give plant-related names to family members, and bug-related nicknames to people they consider close friends. They have given several nicknames to people in town so far:
